Notes on the record
- Sheriff's site lauderdalesheriff.org (confirmed Lauderdale County, Alabama) home page opened in the rescue pass and names Sheriff Joe Hamilton. Its link list includes an Inmate Visitation and Communication page, but that page was refused by our reader (as in the first pass), so the jail checks remain unexamined.
- County site lauderdalecountyal.gov opened: home, departments list, site map, County Commission, meeting minutes, About page. The site map lists no jail, detention, bond, budget, finance or audit page; the jail is left to the sheriff's site.
- The County Commission page says the commission adopts a budget yearly, but no budget document is posted on the county site.
- Not examined for the ten checks: the sheriff's jail page (the one page likely to name the jail and give visitation, phone and commissary details) could not be opened, so scoring ten 'no's would be a false finding.
- What was tried: first pass — lauderdalecountyal.gov (refused then), lauderdalecountysheriff.com, lauderdalecountysheriff.org, sheriff home and visitation pages (refused). Rescue pass — one search; sheriff home (opened); sheriff inmate-visitation-and-communication and helpful-links (refused); county site (opened, as above). Search results otherwise aggregator sites, ignored.
- State inspection/oversight: Alabama has no state agency that sets and enforces standards for county jails. The law that once gave a state agency jail-inspection duties was repealed in 2015.
These three offices decide who sits in a cell in Lauderdale County and what it costs the people who live here. Nationally, almost 77% of the people who died in local jails in 2019 had not been convicted of anything, and suicide was the leading single cause of those deaths (Bureau of Justice Statistics, Mortality in Local Jails, 2000–2019).
