The County Commission
They pay for the jail. The sheriff runs it.
- What they controlThe county budget that funds the sheriff's office and the jail, and the jail building itself.
- What they don'tDay-to-day operations. By law the sheriff has legal custody and charge of the jail and everyone held in it (Ala. Code 14-6-1). No state agency sets and enforces standards for the jail.
- NoteThe commission's site has a Meetings page and a County Commission page, but both were refused by our reader, so agendas, minutes and budget were not read.

Notes on the record
- Examined in the rescue pass (29 Sep 2026). Search found the sheriff's own site sheriff.lawrencecountyal.gov and the county commission's site lawrencecountyal.org; both confirm Lawrence County, Alabama (Moulton).
- The sheriff's Jail Info page names the Lawrence County Detention Center / Corrections Division, gives an average population of 130, and explains bond in plain steps: cash bond at the clerk's office in the courthouse, property bond (all owners must sign), or a licensed bail bondsman (it lists five).
- It states "ALL bonds also require a $35.00 bond-filing fee in the form of a money order." That is a bond fee, not a phone, video-visit, commissary or booking rate, so 'fees' stays 'no'. Video visitation is through inmatesales.com; no rates are posted.
- The sheriff's 'Inmates' page opened but our reader saw only headings and no list or search. It may load by script; 'roster' is 'no' because nothing could be seen, and should be re-checked in a browser.
- The county commission's Sheriff Dept. and Jail page names Sheriff Max Sanders, Chief Deputy Brian Covington, Chief Jailer Danny McMillin, and the address 242 Parker Road, Moulton.
- Budget 'no' is qualified: the commission's Meetings and County Commission pages were refused by our reader, so no budget could be looked for.
- No PREA, deaths, inspection or contract material on the pages read.
- What was tried: first pass — lawrencecountyal.gov (refused), lawrencecountysheriff.com (Indiana — not used), lawrencecountysheriff.org (refused). Rescue pass — one search; sheriff home, Jail Info, Inmates pages and the commission's sherriff-dept page (opened); commission meetings and county-commission pages (refused).
- State inspection/oversight: Alabama has no state agency that sets and enforces standards for county jails. The law that once gave a state agency jail-inspection duties was repealed in 2015.
These three offices decide who sits in a cell in Lawrence County and what it costs the people who live here. Nationally, almost 77% of the people who died in local jails in 2019 had not been convicted of anything, and suicide was the leading single cause of those deaths (Bureau of Justice Statistics, Mortality in Local Jails, 2000–2019).
How much is your sheriff — and your judge — costing you?
Your VOTE is POWERFUL.
The sheriff is elected — every Alabama sheriff's seat is on the November 2026 ballot. So are the commissioners who pay for the jail, and the judges who set bail.
