The Sheriff
Sheriff Kenneth Furlong
- Runs the jailYes. The Detention division is one of the divisions of the Carson City Sheriff's Office, alongside Patrol, Investigations, Dispatch, Civil and Records, the Business Office and Administration
- How the office is filledElected. NRS 248.010 provides for a sheriff elected in each county; Carson City is a consolidated municipality and elects a sheriff in the same way
- ContactSheriff, Carson City, 775-283-7800, kfurlong@carsoncity.gov
- The consolidated municipalityCarson City is not a county with a county seat in the ordinary sense. It is a consolidated municipality - city and county in one - governed by a Mayor and four Supervisors rather than a Board of County Commissioners, with offices at 201 N. Carson Street, Carson City, NV 89701, 775-887-2000
- How this was verifiedListed as Sheriff under Carson City's Local Elected Officials in the Nevada Association of Counties 2026 directory. Carson City's own websites, carson.org and carsoncity.gov, could not be opened from this research environment

The Judges
Nevada District Court judges are elected in nonpartisan countywide (or district-wide) races to six-year terms; Justices of the Peace are elected to six-year terms in their township. Both are state judicial officers under Article 6 of the Nevada Constitution, not county officials, although the county pays for the Justice Court. At first appearance it is normally the Justice of the Peace who sets bail. NRS 211.030 makes the sheriff the keeper of the county jail and NRS 248.050 makes the sheriff responsible for the prisoners in it. Carson City is unusual in that its Justice Court and Municipal Court are run as a single bench of two departments, and the First Judicial District Court is shared with Storey County. The Sheriff's Office holds people for all of the Carson City judicial responsibilities and for the Nevada Highway Patrol, State Parole and Probation and other state and federal agencies.

The County Commissioners
They pay for the jail. The sheriff runs it.
- What they controlThe detention budget, the building itself, and the agreements that let other agencies rent its beds.
- What they don'tDay-to-day operations. The sheriff is separately elected and answers to voters, not to the board.

Notes on the record
- This entry carries a research limitation that should be read before the checks. Carson City's own web addresses could not be opened from this environment: carson.org would not resolve through the network proxy at all, and carsoncity.gov returned HTTP 403 to every request, with and without a browser user-agent. The checks below therefore record only what could actually be opened, and several 'no' answers may mean 'the page could not be reached' rather than 'the page does not exist'. They should be re-run from an unblocked connection before being relied on.
- 'named' is marked yes on an Internet Archive capture of Carson City's own Detention page, which names the Carson City Sheriff's Detention Facility, gives its address and the date it was completed. The capture is from 9 May 2023.
- 'roster' is marked yes on the live Inmate Search, a Power BI Gov report linked as 'Inmate Search' from the Sheriff's Office page and reachable directly. It returned HTTP 200.
- bond_info is marked no on the substance, not on reachability. The county's own Detention page addresses bail only to say 'For Bail questions, please see your local directory to select an appropriate agency' and that staff are prohibited from recommending a bail bond agency. It gives no instruction on how, where or when to post bail.
- Carson City is a consolidated municipality, so 'county seat' is a formality: the seat and the city are the same place. The county name is recorded as 'Carson City County' only because that is the string used in the group assignment; the correct name of the jurisdiction is Carson City.
- Carson City is a consolidated municipality and is governed by a Board of Supervisors, not a Board of County Commissioners: Mayor Lori Bagwell and Supervisors Stacey Giomi, Curtis Horton, Lisa Schuette and Maurice White, at 201 N. Carson Street, Carson City, NV 89701, 775-887-2000. City Manager Glen Martel; Deputy City Manager Stephanie Hicks; Chief Financial Officer Sheri Russell-Benabou. There is no jail district and no dedicated jail tax; the detention facility is a division of the Sheriff's Office. The Board's own agenda and minutes pages are on carson.org, which could not be opened from this environment.
These three offices decide who sits in a cell in Carson City County and what it costs the people who live here. Nationally, almost 77% of the people who died in local jails in 2019 had not been convicted of anything, and suicide was the leading single cause of those deaths (Bureau of Justice Statistics, Mortality in Local Jails, 2000–2019).
