Notes on the record
- Sheriff's FAQ page states: 'The Beaufort County Detention Center is operated by Beaufort County Government.' It sends readers to the detention center's Inmate Inquiry System on beaufortcountysc.gov.
- County detention center pages (https://www.beaufortcountysc.gov/detention-center/index.html) were refused by our reader, so capacity, bond, fees, PREA and the rest could not be judged there; they may hold material.
- What was tried: https://www.bcso.net/, http://www.bcso.net/, https://bcso.net/recruitment-center/, https://bcso.net/our-agency/sheriff-pj-tanner/ refused (PROVENANCE_REQUIRED). Opened: bcso.net/?p=25 and bcso.net/?p=810.
- Not scored: the county's own detention center pages refused our reader, so most checks could not be judged. Marking the rest 'not published' would claim more than was checked. Found published on the pages that did open: named, roster.
- State inspection/oversight: The South Carolina Department of Corrections must inspect every county detention center each year and send written reports to county officials (S.C. Code 24-9-20). A county earns the inspections mark here only if it posts such a report on its own site.
These three offices decide who sits in a cell in Beaufort County and what it costs the people who live here. Nationally, almost 77% of the people who died in local jails in 2019 had not been convicted of anything, and suicide was the leading single cause of those deaths (Bureau of Justice Statistics, Mortality in Local Jails, 2000–2019).
