Notes on the record
- No proper name is published for this jail, so none is invented here.
- The formal name “Teton County Detention Center” appears only in a mailing address. Every narrative page calls it “the Detention Center.”
- The sheriff lists seven agencies it holds prisoners for. ICE is not among them — ICE appears only in a FAQ answer directing callers to the Cheyenne ICE office.
- Voters rejected a $53 million justice center in 2008 and a $2 million planning measure in 2019 before approving the current project.
- The county also posts meeting video and staff-written action reports.
These three offices decide who sits in a cell in Teton County and what it costs the people who live here. Nationally, almost 77% of the people who died in local jails in 2019 had not been convicted of anything, and suicide was the leading single cause of those deaths (Bureau of Justice Statistics, Mortality in Local Jails, 2000–2019).
